Abstract

Madden Julian Oscillation is a sub-seasonal wave that propagates from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean which is marked by increasing rainfall. The MJO Phenomenon could have a strong impact on weather conditions in the tropical areas it passes. Papua is an area that is located in the eastern part of Indonesia which is near the Pacific Ocean. It is the area MJO passes through. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of active MJO propagation in phases 3 to phase 6 on the diurnal cycle of atmospheric dynamics and rainfall in Papua. Based on ECMWF reanalysis data, GSMaP data, and precipitation observations data were obtained from the observed phase period that rainfall propagation in the Indonesian Maritime Continent which is observed in phase 3, moving from west to east with changes in rainfall intensity at each active MJO Phase. In the diurnal cycle, intense convective and high rainfall occurs in the early morning. The rain propagates from west to east, which can be seen from the increase of rainfall intensity in the western of Papua, followed by areas in the eastern of Papua Province.
